Come and see Showdown in action; we’ve a Showcase event this October

If you’ve been curious about Showdown but haven’t yet made it to one of our regular sessions, this month is the perfect opportunity to come and see what all the fuss is about.

On Sunday 25th October, Sight Support Worthing and the Sussex Spitfires Showdown Club are hosting a Showdown Showcase here at the Centre, from 10:30am to 3:00pm. It’s completely free, open to absolutely everyone, and you don’t need any experience whatsoever to take part.

What is Showdown?

Showdown is a fast-paced, competitive one-on-one table game that is rapidly gaining momentum across the UK. Players use flat, paddle-type bats on a specially designed table, aiming to hit the ball along the table, off the side wall, under the centre screen and into the opponent’s goal. What makes it truly unique is that both players wear a blindfold, which means the playing field is completely level, and the sport is genuinely inclusive for sighted and visually impaired players alike.

It’s easy to pick up, but don’t let that fool you. As our own SSW clients Ellie and Sam, who have gone on to win multiple medals and represent Team GB overseas, will tell you, it has a surprisingly deep tactical side once you get into it.

About the Sussex Spitfires

SSW launched its own Showdown club – the Sussex Spitfires – in 2024, after being chosen by British Blind Sport to bring the sport to Worthing. Since then, the team has gone from strength to strength, taking part in tournaments and friendly matches against clubs including the Coventry Comets, with more fixtures planned.

We hold regular free Showdown sessions at the Centre every Monday from 5–7pm and Friday from 2–4pm, and our Showcase on the 25th is a brilliant chance to drop in, watch the team in action, have a go yourself, and see why so many people are falling in love with this sport.
