The volunteers at SSW are an integral part of our charity and enable us to support our community of blind and visually impaired members. We welcome volunteers who wish to help weekly, monthly or every so often; there are roles available whatever skills or time you have to offer.

As a volunteer you will meet new people, volunteer in a friendly environment, and know that you are having an impact on the lives of the people that we support. Read more about the benefits of volunteering here. Living with low or no vision or losing sight can be challenging and sometimes traumatic but, with a little support, our members can live a fulfilling and active life.

We have various volunteer roles at SSW whether you are looking for a regular weekly or monthly commitment or an every-so-often stint.

A Word From our Volunteer Coordinator

“I have been the Volunteer Coordinator at Sight Support Worthing since 2021, and since I joined the charity, I have been totally struck and overwhelmed at the calibre of volunteers that we have. The team and community environment at SSW is wonderful – we wouldn’t be able to operate as we do as a charity if it weren’t for our volunteers – they are the beating heart. It is important to SSW that all our volunteers feel valued and that they enjoy the work that they do.  We certainly don’t have dull days here!  Our volunteers help to enable our members to get out and about, receive the support that they might need to live independent lives, meet new people, enjoy various activities (from art classes to flying planes!), and of course, form friendships that bring light to the lives of all in the SSW community.

We look forward to welcoming you to the SSW Community! Katie

“I have been volunteering at SSW for six years, mainly as a driver and helper. Volunteering here has been incredibly rewarding, as it allows me to support staff and assist members, enriching their lives and bringing a bit of fun. The sense of family and community at SSW is invaluable, preventing isolation for many members. Personally, volunteering has opened doors and boosted my confidence, giving me friends among colleagues. I never regret joining SSW and look forward to another six years!” – Stephen

“I have been a volunteer at SSW for almost three years, helping with coffee mornings and art groups. Volunteering has provided me with valuable skills and the opportunity to meet people from diverse fields. It has significantly improved my workplace know-how and people skills. Personally, as someone visually impaired, volunteering at SSW has offered me immense support and increased my understanding of sight loss. This experience has boosted my confidence and enabled me to support others.” – Susannah

“I joined SSW in the summer of 2022 to help others and form reciprocal relationships within the community. Volunteering has allowed me to meet new people and learn new skills, such as sighted guiding, pottery, and arts and crafts. I enjoy helping on the minibus for trips and recently joined the Book Club, which has been a wonderful way to connect. Volunteering gives me a sense of worth and focus since retiring, and I find great reward in overcoming challenges with the people I work with. SSW is a friendly and supportive place to be.” – Anita
